Puzzles
Solve Lichess puzzles and review mistakes with local progress.
Open Training → Lichess Puzzles…. Puzzles load into the main board. Ironwood saves the current ordinary game when linking a puzzle, but choose Play → Save current game first for any game you want to keep, especially a temporary player-profile review. Use Saved Games to reopen it afterward. Finish an active online or training game before opening puzzles.
Choose Daily puzzle, or use Practice to choose a theme and difficulty and request a new puzzle. Loading requires an internet connection. No Lichess sign-in is needed; difficulty is relative to Lichess’s anonymous baseline of 1500, rather than your personal rating.
Practice themes include Opening, Middlegame, and Endgames, alongside tactical themes such as forks and pins. Phase puzzles are tactics from that part of a game. The puzzle uses the main board’s selected appearance.
From a training profile, choose a difficulty beneath Your next practice focus and select Practice this phase. The profile window closes and Puzzles opens with the recommended phase selected and a puzzle loading. You can change the theme or difficulty in the Practice tab for subsequent puzzles.
Select a piece and its destination on the puzzle board. Ironwood plays the opponent’s solution reply automatically. Incorrect moves leave the position unchanged so you can try again. For pawn promotion, choose the promotion piece below the board.
Hint names the square of the piece to move. Show solution displays the completed line. Using either, or making an incorrect attempt, records the puzzle as missed. The puzzle’s rating and themes appear after completion or reveal.
Review mistakes lets you retry saved puzzles without downloading them again. Progress summarizes the latest result for each of up to 500 puzzles stored in this browser. A clean retry replaces the earlier missed result. Clearing browser site data removes this history. Results are not submitted to Lichess and do not affect your Lichess rating.
Puzzle data is supplied by Lichess under CC0. If the service limits requests, wait a minute before trying again.
Puzzle move history
Choose the Annotations tab at the top of the Puzzle panel to add drawings, notes and chess symbols. Save current game keeps them even before the first move and confirms the save. Saved puzzles reopen in Puzzle mode with their position, recorded progress and annotations. Older saved attempts may need to download their puzzle data again.
Puzzle attempts appear under Puzzles in Saved Games, where you can reopen the attempt and review its recorded moves. These playback records are separate from the puzzle progress used by Progress and Review mistakes. Deleting a saved playback record does not reset those counts.
Playback versus progress
The Puzzles library category reopens saved attempts in Puzzle mode. Progress and Review mistakes use the puzzle results stored separately in this browser. Deleting a playback entry does not turn a solved puzzle into an unsolved one. Training-profile practice recommendations use that profile’s analyzed games; Lichess profile Activity shows results from Lichess. These are different records.
